As part of the 45-acre Memorial Park Sports Complex, this facility is designed to complement the adjacent 21,000-seat stadium. The 2-story Sports Academy features 3 sport courts, a large multipurpose room, meeting space, and classrooms on the ground floor. The upper level provides sports performance areas, plus a one-tenth mile running track. The building presents a welcoming image to the park side and colorful sports-themed graphics on the interstate side.
The facility is designed to be a FEMA Safe Room for emergency shelter needs. It meets federal standards established by FEMA and qualifies as an emergency shelter for hurricane evacuees.
